“Disrupt the CJ-SOO is a clarion call to disrupt a criminal justice system that operates with disastrous consequences in historically marginalized communities.”

    Dr. Sekou Franklin

    Nashville, TN

    About the author:

Courtney Teasley is the CEO of emeffen., a black-, millennial-, woman-owned social enterprise that’s mission is to provide options for the disproportionately affected by what she has coined as the “CJ-SOO,” or criminal justice system of oppression.

Courtney Teasley has been a licensed criminal defense attorney in TN since 2013, a Criminal Justice adjunct professor at a local HBCU, a ‘high-priority’ public school Mock Trial Coach where she earned the Metro Nashville Public Schools Partner of the Year award in 2018 for her work as the school’s competition award-winning mock trial coach, and chair of local social justice committees. Her most recent victory came in 2022 when she made history in Nashville by managing and winning the campaign that unseated a criminal court judge for the first time in the city’s lifespan, electing the youngest Nashville criminal court judge and furthering her commitment to pro-activism.
